Open to Freshmen Required by New York State for Graduation
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Students will have the opportunity to discuss various health issues such as: nutrition, first aid, CPR, mental and emotional health, sexuality, relationships, societal issues and issues related to alcohol, tobacco, drugs and other substance abuse and life skills. Special emphasis is placed on individual responsibility and the decision-making process in the context of Christian values. All students are required to give oral presentations.
Year – ½ Unit
Open to 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students enrolled in Earth Science or Biology
This course will take the place of your traditional physical education class. Open to all dance levels; the course will cover both traditional dance styles as well as Dance Fitness techniques. Techniques such as Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Yoga and Aerobic dance will be covered. Additional SJB Dance uniform and dance shoes are required. Information for purchasing uniforms and shoes will be discussed in class. Course may be repeated as Dance II.
Year – ½ Unit
Open to students enrolled in Chemistry-level Science or Higher
This course is a continuation of Dance I. Open to all dance levels; the course will cover both traditional dance styles as well as Dance Fitness techniques. Techniques such as Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, Yoga and Aerobic dance will be covered. Additional SJB Dance uniform and dance shoes are required. Information for purchasing uniforms and shoes will be discussed in class
Semester – ½ Unit
Open to Juniors and Seniors
This course teaches students, who are interested in sports medicine fields, hands-on skills and knowledge relevant to those careers. It also covers the injuries, injury prevention, and different types of fitness (strength training, aerobic activity, etc.) This course can be taken for college credit through Adelphi University. Student must meet requirements of St. John the Baptist and Adelphi University. It cannot be taken in place of any required Physical Education course.
Semester – ½ Unit
Open to Juniors and Seniors
Nutrition is an essential for understanding nutritional needs and food choices for individuals throughout their lifespan. This course will develop the necessary skills and knowledge for individuals to select among alternatives in the marketplace, with emphasis on nutrient content, healthy choices, and food safety. All students are required to give oral presentations.
BOYS PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This course gives the student the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Emphasis is placed on skill development, rules and regulations and overall knowledge of various sports. Sportsmanship, safety and fair play are all highlighted. Activities to be covered include: soccer, volleyball, basketball, weight training, softball, baseball, European handball, football, tennis, badminton, track & field, yoga, fitness and flag football.
GIRLS PHYSICAL EDUCATION
This course gives the student the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Emphasis is placed on skill development, rules and regulations and overall knowledge of various sports.
